About ECOSAN NETWORK KENYA

Ecosan network Kenya is a loose network of interested ecosan practitioners and other interested people in productive sanitation. The GTZ ecosan program in Germany decided to support ecosan activities in Kenya. It has set up this Blog to provide a platform for everybody interested in ecological sanitation to exchange ideas, to communicate events and to present ecosan projects. Share your information also on www.facebook.com/ecosan.kenya and see pictures of various projects on flickr.

It is based on the work of the EU-SIDA-GTZ EcoSan Promotion Project (EPP) that was running from 11.2007 until 05.2010 under the GTZ water program located at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Maji House in Nairobi. After the end of the EPP the GTZ ecosan program in Germany decided to further support ecosan activities in Kenya. Hence this Blog was created to provid a platform for everybody interested in ecological sanitation to exchange ideas to communicate events and to present ecosan projects with the aim to strengthen the ecosan movement in Kenya and East Africa.

We welcome everybody to join the network as an contributor (author) or to send us your stories and information on ecosan and other kinds of sustainable sanitation. Please forward your interest and information to ecosankenya@gmail.com , so that we can get in touch with you. You can also directly post on the blog by sending an email to ecosankenya.posts@blogger.com.

Ecological sanitation (ecosan) offers a new philosophy of dealing with what is presently regarded as waste and wastewater. Ecosan is based on the systematic implementation of reuse and recycling of nutrients and water as a hygienically safe, closed-loop and holistic alternative to conventional sanitation solutions. Ecosan systems enable the recovery of nutrients from human
faeces and urine for the benefit of agriculture, thus helping to preserve soil fertility, assure food security for future generations, minimize water pollution and recover bioenergy. They ensure that water is used economically and is recycled in a safe way to the greatest possible extent for purposes such as irrigation or groundwater recharge.

The main objectives of ecological sanitation are:
  • To reduce the health risks related to sanitation, contaminated water and waste
  • To prevent the pollution of surface and ground water
  • To optimise the management of nutrients and water resources for the good of food production and prevention of degradation of soil fertility
  • To serve users with confortable, dignified and safe sanitation solutions
